The Igreja e Convento do Pópulo (Church and Convent of Pópulo) are located in Praça Conde de Agrolongo, in the parish of Braga (São José de São Lázaro e São João do Souto), in the city of Braga, Portugal.
The construction of the temple began in 1596 on the initiative of the Archbishop of Braga, D. Frei Agostinho de Jesus. Construction extended from the 16th century to the 19th century. Most of the building, including the facade, was rebuilt at the end of the 18th century by the architect Carlos Amarante.
The Igreja e Convento do Pópulo are classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1977.
The name "Pópulo" comes from the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome, which is of great importance to the Order of Saint Augustine. The church houses a venerated image-icon, to which Frei Agostinho de Jesus had great devotion.
After the extinction of male religious orders in 1834, the complex passed into the hands of the State. The convent housed an Infantry Regiment from 1841. Since 1996, the convent's premises have been owned by the Braga City Council.
Between 2020 and 2021, the church underwent renovation and enhancement works, with a significant investment. The works covered the roofs, towers, facades, floors, ceilings, window frames, high choir balustrade, organ case, among other elements.
The convent currently houses buildings of the Braga City Council. Guided tours are organized, mainly for the appreciation of the tiles that cover the place.
