Located in the parish of São Romão de Arões, in the municipality of Fafe, district of Braga, in Portugal.
A typical example of the Portuguese Romanesque style, with a simple and unadorned structure.
Classified as a National Monument since 1927, recognizing its historical and cultural importance.
A Latin inscription on the south lateral tympanum indicates the date of consecration as March 22, 1237, probably by the abbot of Arões D. Gomes Martins and the archbishop of Braga D. Silvestre Godinho. The church has undergone several changes over the years.
The church shows Gothic and Baroque influences due to the modifications made throughout history. It has a longitudinal plan with a nave covered by a Baroque wooden vault, vaulted chancel, and capitals ornamented with Romanesque motifs.
The main facade is simple, with a lateral bell tower and a portal surrounded by a smooth archway. The south lateral portal contains an inscription of the consecration of the church in 1237. The chevet has deep blind arcades and buttresses.
The interior of the nave is covered by a painted coffered ceiling. The triumphal arch features capitals decorated with Romanesque motifs. The chancel is covered by a broken stone vault and contains traces of mural painting and lateral altars in carved wood.
The church has a dim interior luminosity, with daylight entering through narrow slit-type spyholes, all at the same height.
Buttresses are used in the chancel, which is vaulted, to ensure the solidity of the building. The blind arcades on the sides serve as buttresses.
