The Church of São Miguel do Castelo (Saint Michael of the Castle) is located next to Guimarães Castle, in the parish of Oliveira, São Paio and São Sebastião, in the city of Guimarães, Portugal.
It has been a National Monument since 1910.
Despite the legend that says the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, was baptized here, the church dates from the 13th century, making that story unlikely. However, it is believed that the baptismal font used in the ceremony is still kept on site. The church was built by the Collegiate Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira (Our Lady of Oliveira) and consecrated by the Primate of Braga, Silvestre Godinho, in 1239. Over the centuries, it fell into disrepair and was only restored in the 19th century by the Sociedade Martins Sarmento (Martins Sarmento Society).
The church is small in size and features characteristics of the Romanesque style, although with some elements that foreshadow the rise of the Gothic style.
The Church of São Miguel do Castelo is part of a historical and architectural complex of great importance, along with Guimarães Castle and the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza (Paço dos Duques de Bragança). These monuments form a set that represents both the history and architecture of the region.
