The Church of São Miguel do Castelo is located in Guimarães, built on the slope of Monte Latito, an area known for its historical importance and also as Sacred Hill. Set in a serene and wooded environment, the church is connected to the urban fabric by pedestrian paths that invite a peaceful stroll through this historic area of Guimarães.
This small temple is deeply linked to the history of Portugal, being one of the most symbolic landmarks of the nation's foundation. Popular tradition holds that the Church of São Miguel do Castelo was the baptismal site of D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal. Although historical research places the building's construction in the 13th century, and therefore after the monarch's birth, the legend has persisted throughout the centuries. Inside, an ancient baptismal font can be seen, to which this foundational narrative is associated, featuring an inscription alluding to the event.
Dating from the 13th century, the church exhibits a late Romanesque style, notable for its modesty and lack of ornamentation. It is a small construction, with a single nave and a rectangular chancel, both built of robust granite ashlar. The facades are simple, with narrow openings that allow for subdued interior lighting. The roofs are gabled, and the side facades are topped by a sequence of corbels. The unadorned interior features granite walls and a wooden ceiling with visible beams.
The interior floor of the Church of São Miguel do Castelo holds a particularly interesting aspect for visitors: it is paved with various funerary stelae. These slabs mark the burial sites of noble warriors and other figures connected to the nation's beginnings, lending the space an atmosphere of homage and historical memory.
