The Church of São Martinho de Candoso has been classified as a National Monument since 1910, recognizing its historical and architectural importance.
The church features a combination of architectural styles, with Romanesque and Neoclassical elements. It has a single nave and has undergone renovations over time.
Although the exact date of its construction is unknown, the church has existed since at least 1043. There are indications that there may have been a Visigothic temple on the site previously.
The church has thick walls with loopholes and remnants of corbels with figures of animals and human beings on the cornice. Noteworthy is the presence of two separate entrances for men and women, reflecting the culture of the time.
Inside, there are traces of Paleochristian, Visigothic, Romanesque, and Baroque styles. Highlights include the Visigothic-style baptismal font and the 17th-century gilded altarpieces, with primitive paintings.
The chancel arch, sculpted and engraved with geometric elements of Paleochristian tradition, separates the assembly space from the sacrificial altar, following the orthodox style of the temple.
The church's ceiling features simple paintings of the virtues. The small side altars reflect a more individualized piety in contrast to the collective expression of the Middle Ages.
The Church of São Martinho de Candoso represents an era of great importance from both a religious and artistic point of view, being a valuable testament to this golden period.
