The Church of São Jorge de Abadim is located in the village of Abadim, integrated into the Santo António area, in the municipality of Cabeceiras de Basto. Its position offers a glimpse into the calmer environment of the parish, a characteristic sometimes associated with temples of other times, which were situated slightly away from the center of the settlements.
This temple, dedicated to Saint George, the patron saint of the community, has a history dating back at least to the mid-18th century. Documents from 1747 already described it as a consolidated center of faith, with an active religious life and several altars, reflecting the importance of local devotion.
At that time, the church held the status of an abbey, with an abbot as its parish priest, which underscores its relevance and central role in the life of the parish of Abadim throughout the centuries.
Upon approaching the Church of São Jorge, one of its most singular characteristics is noticeable: the bell tower, which rises independently from the main body of the building. This particularity gives the complex a distinct and uncommon visual identity in the region's religious architecture.
Inside, the single nave leads the eye to the main altar, the true artistic heart of the temple. Here, the richness of the gilded carving that adorns this space stands out, a meticulous work that invites attentive observation and appreciation of the art manifested there.
