Category: Religious Architecture > Church

District: Braga > Vila Verde > Valdreu > Santo António de Mixões da Serra

Geographical Location

Situated in the picturesque area of Santo António de Mixões da Serra, in the locality of Valdreu, municipality of Vila Verde, this church stands at an altitude of approximately 750 meters. Its position on the southwest slope of Serra Amarela grants it a natural setting of rare beauty, very close to the Peneda-Gerês National Park. The village of Mixões da Serra, where the sanctuary is located, is part of "Aldeias de Portugal" (Villages of Portugal), a characteristic that underscores its authentic and traditional ambiance.

A Sanctuary with History

The history of the Church of Santo António de Mixões da Serra is deeply rooted in the faith and gratitude of local communities. The current sanctuary, inaugurated in 1952, replaced an older chapel whose construction dates back to the 17th century. Its erection was due to a promise made to Saint Anthony, invoking his protection for animals, particularly during a period of plague and against the threat of wolves. This legacy of devotion and the intrinsic link between the saint and the rural world mark the essence of this place of worship.

The Viewpoint and the Surrounding Landscape

One of the church's most notable features is its imposing granite staircase, which leads to an area that functions as a true viewpoint. From this elevated point, the landscape unfolds into vast and breathtaking panoramas. It is possible to contemplate the extensive valleys of the Cávado and Lima rivers, and to discern the profile of various mountain ranges, including Gerês, Peneda, Amarela, and Alvão. On clear days, the gaze reaches as far as Terras de Trás-os-Montes, providing a natural tableau that invites observation and contemplation.

The Tradition of the Blessing of Animals

The Church of Santo António de Mixões da Serra is the stage for one of the most unique and popular pilgrimages in the country: the Blessing of Animals. This centuries-old tradition, dating back to the 17th century (specifically 1680), testifies to the deep connection of the region's people to animal protection. Every year, on the Sunday preceding June 13th, thousands of people flock to the sanctuary, bringing their animals, from dogs and cats to cattle, horses, and doves, to receive the blessing of the patron saint. This event is a living expression of faith, culture, and community identity.
