The church is located in the parish of Abade de Neiva, in the municipality of Barcelos, district of Braga, in Portugal.
The church has been classified as a National Monument since 1927, recognizing its historical and architectural importance.
The church had its first construction started in 1152 by Queen D. Mafalda of Savoy, wife of D. Afonso Henriques. However, it was not completed during her lifetime. In 1220, the church already belonged to the royal patronage.
The church presents architectural elements possibly dating from the 14th century. The presence of a tower, possibly erected in the 15th century, stands out.
In 1310, at the request of Master Martinho, a Collegiate Church was instituted in the church, composed of a Rector and three Chaplains.
Over the years, the church has undergone several restorations. In 1732, a renovation was carried out in the galilee, and in 1758, renovations were made to the walls of the churchyard.
The church has five altars, including the high altar with the Blessed Sacrament and others dedicated to Saint Anthony, Saint Joseph, and Our Lady of the Rosary, each with its associated brotherhood.
In the 19th century, the building was in ruins. In 1904, reconstruction work was carried out on the front wall and the church floor was removed.
