The church is located in the place called Mosteiro, in the parish of Fontarcada, municipality of Póvoa de Lanhoso, district of Braga, Portugal. It was founded in 1067 as the Benedictine Monastery of São Salvador and went through disputes with local nobles in the 13th and 14th centuries.
Since 1910, the Church of Fontarcada has been considered a National Monument, recognizing its historical and architectural importance.
The church has Romanesque origins, with stylistic characteristics preserved over time.
The main façade is austere, with a portal of three archivolts, colonnettes with carved capitals, and a rose window with a frame of two rings.
The external apse is surrounded by three columns with sculpted capitals, featuring a cornice of Lombard arches and a cyma ornamented with semi-spheres.
The church has a lateral portal with a pointed arch, two archivolts, and capitals sculpted with vegetal motifs. The tympanum is adorned with a cross pattée, with a sun and a moon sculpted on the sides.
The bell tower, added later to the Romanesque body of the church, has a portal with a round arch and a pyramidal roof.
The church has a wooden ceiling over a single nave. The apse has a vault sectioned by ribs in segments, and the chancel is richly decorated with blind arcades and medieval frescoes.
The capitals of the church feature carvings sculpted with vegetal motifs and pre-Romanesque characteristics.
The church has undergone restorations over time to preserve its structure and architectural elements.
As one of the few remaining examples of Romanesque architecture in the region, the Church of Fontarcada is an important attraction for tourists interested in the history and cultural heritage of Portugal.
