The Church of Avidos is situated atop a hill, approximately in the west-central part of Avidos, granting it a prominent role in the local landscape. It is an easily identifiable landmark within the surrounding urbanisation.
This place of worship boasts a history dating back to ancient times. The existence of the Parish Church of Avidos was already documented in the Inquiries of 1220. This means that, for over eight centuries, the church has been an integral part of Avidos' life and community, witnessing the locality's evolution throughout the ages.
Over the centuries, the church underwent several interventions that shaped its current appearance. In the late 19th century, around 1891, significant works were carried out to improve its facilities. Later, in the 1930s, works promoted by the Count of S. Bento stand out, which included the painting of the ceiling and the construction of an altar dedicated to Saint Ovídio. In 1936, a notable element was added to the building: the tower, whose construction was made possible with the support of the local community. More recently, between 1993 and 1994, the church was subject to careful restoration, once again with the active participation of the inhabitants, demonstrating the strong connection of the population to their temple.
