The Vila Flor Cultural Centre is located in Guimarães, in the Urgezes area, in a setting that reflects the rich historical tapestry of the city, a World Heritage site. Its implantation allows for a privileged perspective of the surrounding urban environment, combining the tranquility of its gardens with its proximity to the historic centre. This positioning gives it a distinct atmosphere, where culture and history meet naturally.
The Vila Flor Cultural Centre stands on the foundations of the old Vila Flor Palace, a building dating back to the 18th century. This palace played a significant role in local history, having been the stage for notable events. It was here, in 1853, that Queen D. Maria II, with her presence, elevated the then town of Guimarães to the status of a city. Later, in 1884, the palace hosted the first Industrial and Commercial Exhibition of Guimarães, demonstrating its relevance to the social and economic life of the time. Its acquisition by the municipality in 1976 marked the beginning of a new chapter for this historic building.
The Vila Flor Cultural Centre is the result of a careful intervention that successfully integrated the imposing 18th-century Palace with a contemporary construction for the performing arts. The architecture of the complex establishes a harmonious dialogue between the baroque grandeur of the original building and the modern lines of the new space. The Vila Flor gardens, designed in terraces and considered among the most beautiful in the region, are a central element of this integration, offering a remarkable scenic environment. These outdoor spaces were even awarded an Honourable Mention in the National Landscape Architecture Prize in 2006, highlighting their beauty and the care taken in their restoration.
Inaugurated in 2005, the Vila Flor Cultural Centre has established itself as one of the main cultural infrastructures in the country. It was designed to continue and boost the cultural life of Guimarães, offering a cutting-edge space for various artistic manifestations. With two distinct auditoriums and a large exhibition area, the Cultural Centre hosts a vast and diverse programme. Its vocation is that of a multidisciplinary and multicultural centre, regularly presenting works by artists from different backgrounds and languages, which contributes to enriching the local and national cultural landscape.
