From Past to Present Culture

Gnration occupies a building with a remarkable history in Braga. In the past, this space served as a barracks for the Republican National Guard. Its transformation, conceived as part of the Braga European Youth Capital 2012 initiative and completed in 2013, marked the birth of a new cultural centre. Today, gnration is a landmark in the city, dedicated to creating and presenting proposals in the fields of art, science, and technology, fostering creativity and innovation.

Architecture and Environment

The architecture of gnration stands out for the way it integrates the past and the present. The intervention in the old barracks explores the contrast between the original structure and the new approach that re-appropriates the space. One of its most distinctive features is a visible cut in the facade, which symbolizes the rupture of the intervention and invites curiosity about its interior. The project also sought to blur the boundaries between the building and the street, extending the public space into gnration and promoting great visual and physical permeability.

Inside, it's possible to discover courtyards named after constellations, the Dog courtyard, the Hunter courtyard, and the Bear courtyard, with their names inscribed on the floor, creating a distinctive touch. These spaces are enriched by a metallic structure that supports vertical vegetation, lending a unique image to the internal courtyards and emphasizing the idea of a space in constant evolution and appropriation over time.

Creative Activity Hub

Gnration functions as a vibrant centre of cultural activity. Its various spaces and rooms host a vast program covering multiple forms of artistic expression, from visual exhibitions to music performances and performing arts. The Black Box room, for example, is a stage for different artistic expressions.

This venue was designed to be a catalyst for ideas, fostering creativity and innovation. It presents itself as an open space for different audiences and disciplines, promoting a constant exchange between art, science, and technology, making it a meeting point for those seeking diverse and contemporary cultural experiences.
