The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Alívio is located in the town of Gandra, within the area designated as Nossa Senhora do Alívio, in the municipality of Vila Verde. Situated in a peri-urban setting, in the Homem river valley, this religious complex is surrounded by a landscape that harmonizes dwellings and green spaces. Its elevated position highlights it in the landscape, accentuated by an access staircase that invites visitors.
In the spacious front churchyard, there is a stone cross and landscaped areas, designed to provide an environment of contemplation and rest for visitors and pilgrims. This outdoor space is ideal for a peaceful break, complementing the visit to the sanctuary's interior.
The history of this sanctuary dates back to a Marian apparition that occurred in 1790. Accounts indicate that Father Francisco Xavier Leite Fragoas, then parish priest of São Miguel de Soutelo, was convalescing from a severe illness that prevented him from getting up. In deep faith, the priest made a vow to the Virgin Mary, promising to build a church in her honor if he recovered his health.
After a vision of intense light and a remarkable cure, Father Fragoas dedicated himself to fulfilling his promise. The construction of the original chapel began in 1794 and was completed in 1798. Since then, the site has become a point of strong devotion and an important pilgrimage center, attracting faithful and curious visitors who seek to learn its fascinating history.
The complex of Nossa Senhora do Alívio integrates, besides the main church, a primitive chapel and various constructions that developed over time. The larger church, with its imposing Neo-Gothic architecture, features a Latin cross plan, with a long central nave flanked by bell towers. The verticality of the building is emphasized by the lantern tower that rises above the transept, creating a distinct profile on the horizon.
The facades, predominantly white, are enriched with granite elements, such as window frames, quoins, and openwork parapets. Inside, visitors can admire the barrel-vaulted ceiling, the marble holy water fonts, and the colorful stained-glass windows that illuminate the space. The chancel, made of granite ashlar, is a testament to the artistic richness and dedication to the construction of this place of worship. The primitive chapel, though more modest, retains its original charm, having been preserved and restored, offering an insight into the sanctuary's genesis.
