The São João Baptista de Esposende Fort is located in the parish of Esposende, Marinhas and Gandra, in the city and municipality of Esposende, district of Braga, in Portugal.
Originally built between 1699 and 1704, the fort was intended to defend the mouth of the Cávado river against maritime attacks.
The fort has an irregular star-shaped plan, with bastions at each vertex and hexagonal sentry boxes. Over time, it underwent modifications and currently has a rectangular plan with two bastions.
The fort houses a lighthouse, a cylindrical iron tower painted red. Next to the lighthouse, there is a two-story yellow building intended for the lighthouse keepers.
In September 2020, the Esposende City Council acquired the fort for a period of 50 years and will invest approximately 1.5 million euros in its rehabilitation. The space has been used for exhibitions and cultural activities.
In March 2022, the Esposende City Council launched a public tender for the fort's rehabilitation project, aiming to create the North Coast Interpretive Center. The approximate value of the project is 260 thousand euros.
The Esposende Fort has been considered a Property of Public Interest since 1982, due to its historical and architectural importance.
