Located on Avenida Central, one of Braga's most dynamic and central arteries, this statue is situated in the heart of the city. Its privileged position makes it easily accessible, framed by an urban setting that harmonizes city life with pleasant pedestrian areas, inviting a pause for observation.
This monument commemorates the visit of His Holiness Pope John Paul II to the city of Braga, which took place in May 1982. Inaugurated in 1987, the monument is a permanent tribute to Karol Józef Wojtyła, a prominent figure in contemporary history. Pope John Paul II is recognized for his influential role in the 20th century, notably in promoting dialogue between different religions and improving the Catholic Church's relations with other faiths. His visit to Braga left a lasting impression that this monument perpetuates.
The monument is a joint creation by sculptor Zulmiro de Carvalho and architect Domingos Tavares. Its composition is rich in symbolism, integrating three main elements. Prominently featured are three granite pyramids, which house a crypt within, evoking the three sacred mountains that embrace Braga: Bom Jesus do Monte, Sameiro, and Falperra. This ensemble is complemented by a stone wall, whose line expresses the "line of sight". Adjacent to the Avenida Central promenade, a circular plaque with the inscription "TO HIS HOLINESS JOHN PAUL II ON HIS VISIT TO THIS CITY. MAY 82" reinforces the message of its origin and purpose, inviting reflection on its importance and significance.
