The Cruzeiro da Cruz (Cross Monument) is located in the Assento area, within the serene locality of Cruz, an integral part of the municipality of Celorico de Basto. Its position is set in a typically rural environment, inviting an experience of tranquility and contemplation, framed by the characteristic landscape of the region.
This cruzeiro, whose origin is presumed to date back to the 16th century, is a remarkable piece of religious stonework. Built upon a quadrangular base that rises in a truncated pyramidal shape, it gives it a solid and rooted presence in the location. From this base emerges a monolithic, carefully faceted shaft, culminating in a cross of rectangular section, marking the landscape with its silhouette.
The cross itself possesses particular features that capture attention: its front face is smooth, without the image of the Crucified Christ. However, on the rear face, facing the path, it is possible to observe a representation of the Virgin Mary in a pietà pose, holding Christ. This image is distinguished by its polychrome painting, which adds an element of color and life to the stone.
A significant addition to the cruzeiro's structure is the portico that surrounds it, a 20th-century construction designed for its preservation and enhancement. This architectural element is supported by four quadrangular granite pillars, which widen in their lower half for greater stability. The space is delimited by elegant railings and an iron gate, which protect the ensemble.
On the exterior, the portico is covered by a hipped roof, which integrates harmoniously into the rural context. The interior reveals a wooden trough-shaped ceiling, painted in an intense blue tone, creating a welcoming atmosphere conducive to detailed observation of the work, inviting a moment of pause and reflection.
