The Cine-Teatro de Fafe is located in the parish of Fafe, in the municipality of Fafe, district of Braga, in Portugal.
The theater was built in 1923 and is considered a cultural and recreational landmark for the city of Fafe. It was financed by Fafe emigrants from Brazil.
The Cine-Teatro building features an eclectic architecture, combining neo-Baroque and neoclassical elements. The brick-colored facade is decorated with paintings, Greek medallions, and winged angels.
Currently, the Cine-Teatro de Fafe has a capacity of 305 seats and hosts a variety of contemporary events, providing entertainment for visitors.
The Cine-Teatro de Fafe was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 2002, due to its historical and architectural importance.
After a period of closure, the theater was acquired by the municipality in 2001 and underwent a reconstruction process. It was reopened in 2009, along with a new annex building called Manoel de Oliveira.
Over the years, the Cine-Teatro de Fafe has hosted theater performances, film screenings, and cultural events. It has also served as a venue for parties, balls, and political rallies.
During the Estado Novo period, the theater was a space of resistance, housing rallies of opposition to the regime. Its owner, José Summavielle Soares, was a staunch Republican and Democrat.
The interior of the theater features a horseshoe-shaped layout, with a vaulted ceiling and decoration alluding to famous musicians of the 18th and 19th centuries, such as Mozart and Chopin.
In addition to the main hall, the new annex building to the Cine-Teatro de Fafe includes a multipurpose hall called Manoel de Oliveira, with a capacity of 150 people.
