Situated in the municipality of Fafe, in the district of Braga, the Castro de Santo Ovídio stands in a strategic and elevated position in the landscape. Its high-altitude location offers visitors a vast panorama over the natural surroundings, highlighting the careful choice of this site by ancient communities, both for its defensibility and for visual control of the surrounding territory.
This archaeological site preserves the remains of an ancient fortified settlement, whose occupation predominantly dates back to the Iron Age. When exploring the site, it is possible to observe the remarkable defensive structures that once protected the community, such as the lines of walls and the ditches. These architectural elements demonstrate the engineering and social organization of the populations that settled here.
Within the defensive perimeter, the foundations of ancient dwellings are found, mostly circular in plan and built of stone. These remains offer a perspective on the spatial organization of the settlement and the daily lives of the people who inhabited the Castro de Santo Ovídio for centuries, before the arrival and influence of Romanization.
The Castro de Santo Ovídio constitutes an important testimony to human presence and cultural evolution in the Fafe region. It represents a point of convergence between proto-historic cultures and the period of transition to the Romanization of the Iberian Peninsula. Its long history of occupation, visible in the archaeological strata, reveals the adaptation and persistence of communities in the face of historical and social transformations.
Beyond its archaeological and historical value, the Castro de Santo Ovídio offers an immersive experience in the natural beauty of Minho. Its elevated position provides a privileged setting for contemplating the wide views over the valley and the surrounding mountains. This natural backdrop not only highlights the strategic importance of the site in the past but also invites tranquility and observation of the Minho landscape today.
