The Casa do Povo de Creixomil is located in the parish of Creixomil, a locality situated near the historic city of Guimarães. Situated in the Alto da Bandeira area, the institution is integrated into a predominantly residential environment, characterized by streets and a small square that give it a defined and accessible urban setting.
Founded in 1983, the Casa do Povo de Creixomil was born from the initiative of a group of local citizens, driven by the desire to create a central space for the development and well-being of their community. Since its inception, with the free cession of the facilities by the Parish Council, this space has consolidated itself as a meeting point and a driver of diverse activities, reflecting the spirit of mutual aid and the vitality of its inhabitants.
One of the pillars of the Casa do Povo de Creixomil is its dedication to the preservation and dissemination of regional folklore. Its Folklore Group, established in 1986, plays a fundamental role in researching and representing the traditional dances and songs of Creixomil and the Minho region. Through their performances, it is possible to observe the richness of Minho's popular culture in choreographies such as "A Chula Batida," "O Sapatinho," or "O Vira de Cruz." Particularly noteworthy is the dance "O Velho", an ancient and emblematic choreographic expression of Guimarães, which uniquely illustrates vitality and decrepitude, in a ritualistic movement full of symbolism.
In addition to its cultural aspects, the Casa do Povo also houses the Fishing Section, founded in 1989. This section is not limited to sports practice but promotes it in a conscious and responsible manner. One of its focuses is to instill in participants, especially the younger ones, the importance of respecting nature. Ecological sport fishing is valued, encouraging the return of fish to their natural habitat and maintaining the cleanliness of fishing spots, thus actively contributing to the environmental sustainability of the region.
