The Casa da Memória Engenho de Recovelas is located in Ribeiros, a village in the municipality of Fafe. This space is set in a rural environment, characterised by its tranquility and the natural beauty of the landscape. The serene atmosphere of the village offers a sense of calm, allowing visitors to appreciate the bucolic setting of the region.
This site is an old olive oil mill, transformed into a museum space dedicated to the preservation and demonstration of traditional olive oil production. Inside, it is possible to observe the mechanisms and tools that were once essential for this process. The space highlights ancestral methods of olive oil extraction, including the use of mechanical water power, a practice that has gradually disappeared over time.
More than just a museum, the Casa da Memória Engenho de Recovelas stands as a guardian of the collective memory of the people of Ribeiros. The central objective is to preserve the intangible heritage and memories of a community. The building incorporates a digital space that allows visitors to access various contents related to the history and experiences of Ribeiros' inhabitants. To complement this experience, a book detailing the traditional olive oil production processes and methods practised at this mill is also available.
The building housing the Casa da Memória is the result of a requalification project. Acquired by the Ribeiros Parish Council in 2019, the old mill was carefully restored. The intervention aimed to reconstitute its traditional image, maintaining the authenticity and historical value of the space. The requalification seeks not only the material valorisation of the site but also the promotion of the knowledge and practices of an era, giving the mill a renewed purpose as a point of interest and heritage safeguard.
