Casa da Mainha is located in Panóias, in the municipality of Braga, in the area commonly known as “Prazo de Tibães”. In the shadow of the old Convent of São Martinho de Tibães, it is surrounded by agricultural fields and small chestnut groves that define the rural Minho landscape.
Dating back to the 16th century, it was part of the couto (privileged territory) of Tibães Convent, serving as a residence and support for the religious community's agricultural activities. In the 17th century, it underwent a significant intervention by Lourenço Fernandes da Silva, captain of the monastery's Ordenanças (militia), who expanded the building and introduced transitional details between Mannerism and Baroque.
Built in granite, the facade displays regular openings and a segmental arch at the main door, lending it an austere but balanced presence. The prominent eaves and sash windows reinforce its functional character, without sacrificing a certain elegance typical of monastic buildings.
The interior retains vestiges of the typical compartmentalization of monastic farmhouses, with some stonework details that recall its close connection to the convent.
Around the house, open agricultural clearings alternate with small clusters of ash and alder trees along the Panoias River. This tranquil setting invites a pause, allowing one to feel the legacy of Tibães Monastery, whose presence can still be sensed on the nearby slopes.
