Bucos is a peaceful village in the municipality of Cabeceiras de Basto. Casa da Lã (Wool House) is located in this community, in an environment that maintains a strong connection to its roots and community life. Its presence in the village highlights the lasting importance of local know-how, passed down from generation to generation in the heart of this region.
Casa da Lã was born from a project initiated in 2005, through a collaboration between the Municipality of Cabeceiras de Basto and the Bucos Parish Council. Its main purpose is to safeguard and perpetuate a valuable intangible heritage: the ancestral know-how related to wool processing. This is a deeply rooted tradition in the Bucos community that has been passed down through several generations. The space functions as an interpretation center, a central point for understanding the cultural relevance of this art in the region.
Inside Casa da Lã, it is possible to closely observe the journey of wool, from its raw material to its transformation into finished pieces. Women from the village of Bucos share their knowledge and demonstrate, step by step, the various stages of this manual work, from shearing to the making of the final product. The visit reveals the traditional tools used over time in this art, providing a genuine understanding of the processes involved in transforming this natural fiber.
This place celebrates the union between tradition and innovation in wool work. Fashion designer Helena Cardoso collaborates with the project, integrating ancestral knowledge into the design of contemporary pieces. It is possible to appreciate a variety of wool creations, which include both classic pieces, such as socks and blankets, that have been made in Bucos for a long time, and a modern line, with items such as scarves, coats, sweaters, gloves, beanies, neck warmers, or pillows, showcasing the versatility of this natural fiber.
