Casa da Botica, notably due to its historical connection to the Municipal Library, is located in the Portela area, integrated into the center of the town of Póvoa de Lanhoso.
Positioned as part of the Municipal Interest Set, this house is embedded within the historical built fabric, standing out for its relevance to the local heritage.
This property originated in the second half of the 17th century. Over the centuries, Casa da Botica underwent various adaptation and expansion works, shaping the structure we see today.
An inscription on one of the interior doors, dated 1676 for the original construction and 1862 for a renovation, is a direct testament to these past transformations. In 1931, the building was acquired by the Municipal Council, becoming part of the public heritage.
Before assuming the role that gave it part of its current name, the building was adapted in 1969 to house a preparatory school, a change that entailed significant alterations to its interior.
For approximately thirty years, Casa da Botica was home to the Municipal Library, becoming a reference point for culture and reading in Póvoa de Lanhoso and reinforcing its identity as a space serving the community.
Casa da Botica is distinguished by its three-story construction, with the section on the first floor being the oldest. The part considered the noblest section of the building was added at a later time than the initial construction.
Its classification as part of the Municipal Interest Set underscores the importance of this building in preserving the memory and the historical and architectural character of the town of Póvoa de Lanhoso.
