Located in the parish of Tadim, municipality of Braga, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Candeias (Our Lady of the Candles) is situated in a rural environment. Its position, sometimes identified as on Monte da Bandeira, provides a tranquil setting, slightly removed from the center of the parish.
The existence of this chapel in the region has been documented since the 16th century, with references dating back to 1548. The architectural configuration we observe today is largely the result of modifications carried out in the 17th century. Over the centuries, the building has been subject to care and restoration, including interventions in the 20th century, to ensure its preservation.
One of the visual aspects of the chapel is its porch, which is supported by columns, creating a sheltered area at the entrance. Inside, the altar altarpiece is one of the most prominent elements, representing a focal point for contemplation and devotion.
The Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Candeias has a strong connection with the community's popular traditions and beliefs. In particular, it is associated with an old saying related to the weather on February 2nd, dedicated to Nossa Senhora das Candeias (Our Lady of the Candles): "if Our Lady of the Candles is smiling, winter is yet to come; if she is crying, winter is passing." This popular belief associates a sunny day on that date with a prolonged winter, while rain suggests that the cold season is ending.
In recent years, the chapel has undergone rehabilitation and remodeling works. These interventions aimed at restoring both the interior spaces and the exterior structure, ensuring that the building remains in good condition and preserved for future generations and visitors.
