Situated atop a peaceful elevation in the Guia area, part of the locality of Belinho e Mar, this chapel and its grounds offer a rural and isolated environment. Its privileged position in the municipality of Esposende provides extensive panoramic views over the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding landscape, inviting a moment of contemplation.
The current Chapel of Our Lady of Guia was built in 1974, replacing an earlier religious structure that had existed on the site since at least the 17th century. The chapel features popular architecture, with simple lines and a plastered, white-painted facade, notably with a granite base.
The main facade is topped with a gable and a cross at its apex. In the center, there is the portal, flanked by rectangular windows, and above, a quatrefoil oculus that illuminates the interior. Inside, the highlight is the image of the patron saint, Our Lady of Guia, accompanied by other religious figures important to local devotion.
The enclosure around the chapel constitutes a true sanctuary, developed throughout the second half of the 20th century. One of the most notable elements is the monumental staircase leading to the chapel, whose construction began in 1988, facilitating access and symbolically marking the path of the faithful.
This path to the summit is enriched by various sculptural groups and other monuments, such as the image of Saint Christopher (installed in 1980) and the image of the Shepherd Children (placed in 1997). These elements transform the path into a journey of faith and reflection.
Devotion to Our Lady of Guia has ancient roots in the community, with this invocation particularly associated with the protection of travelers and seafarers. The Virgin Mary is venerated here as "Condutora" (Leader) or "Guia" (Guide), a title with ancient origins reflecting her importance as a protector on the paths of life and the sea.
This site has been an important pilgrimage point for the archpriesthood of Esposende since 2001, annually hosting a solemn act of faith that gathers the parishes of the region. The sanctuary's connection to the sea is profound, functioning as a spiritual lighthouse and a point of reference for both those traveling by land and those sailing offshore.
The mount where the chapel is located is steeped in ancient traditions and legends. One of the best known relates to a nearby cave, nicknamed the "Monk's Cave". Popular tradition tells that this place served as a refuge for a man known as "Jóia," who lived there as a hermit in the 19th century, giving rise to stories that endure in local memory.
There is also the so-called "Goatherd's Rock", a boulder with a particular history in the community. This rock was consecrated and received an image of the Prophet Elijah in 1999. These narratives and elements enrich the cultural significance of the sanctuary and the surrounding rocky landscape.
