The Chapel of S. Sebastião is located in the village of Arnoia, belonging to the municipality of Celorico de Basto. It is situated in an area of the village known as São Sebastião, lending its name to this zone.
This place of worship has its roots in the 17th century. Authorization for the chapel's construction was granted in 1688, marking the beginning of its history. Born from the desire to serve the local community, the chapel quickly became a point of reference for the inhabitants of Arnoia.
Over the centuries, the Chapel of S. Sebastião accompanied the life of the community. In 1727, for instance, it became the headquarters of the Confraria das Almas (Brotherhood of Souls), a sign of its importance for the religious and social organization of the time. However, the passage of time and use left their marks, leading to the building showing considerable signs of degradation by the mid-19th century, around 1864.
Given this situation, significant recovery and expansion works were undertaken starting in 1865. These interventions aimed not only to restore the chapel but also to adapt and beautify it for ceremonies. It was during this period that, among other works, the walls were raised, a tower was built, and interior elements like the main altarpiece were renovated.
The Chapel of S. Sebastião, as we can see it today, is the result of this historical journey, maintaining its original religious function. The building reflects the different eras and the interventions that shaped it, being a testament to the faith and resilience of the Arnoia community throughout the centuries. Its modest presence in the local landscape invites a moment of pause and reflection.
