Praia do Porto das Barcas is located on the coast of the municipality of Odemira, relatively close to the village of Vila Nova de Milfontes. This site is part of the protected landscape of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.
The beach is situated next to a small traditional fishing harbour, which gives it part of its name. It is flanked by rocky cliffs characteristic of this coastal area. Sometimes, this beach is also known as Praia do Portinho do Canal, due to its proximity to the small fishing port that names it.
This beach features a considerable stretch of sand, but it mixes with areas where rounded pebbles, smoothed by the action of the sea, predominate. The nature of the beach changes significantly depending on the tide.
During low tide, a vast rocky surface becomes visible, transforming the coastal landscape. Looking out to sea, it is possible to spot some boulders emerging a short distance from the beach.
The proximity to the fishing harbour of Porto das Barcas gives the beach a unique atmosphere. This small port still maintains a strong connection to the region's artisanal and traditional fishing.
The presence of fishing activity contributes to a more genuine character, linked to local culture, distinguishing it from other beaches more solely dedicated to leisure.
The natural surroundings of Praia do Porto das Barcas are marked by the rocky cliffs that delimit it. This contrast between the verticality of the rock and the horizontality of the sea and the sandy area creates an interesting coastal scenery.
The beach possesses a certain wild and preserved character, typical of the Alentejo coast within a Natural Park. It offers a more tranquil environment to enjoy the beauty of the natural landscape.
