Praia das Furnas is located on the south bank of the Mira River estuary, in the Almograve area, within the municipality of Odemira. It is situated at a point where the river waters mix with those of the Atlantic Ocean, forming a unique coastal landscape. From the beach, it is possible to have a wide view of the river mouth and the opposite bank.
This beach stands out as a place where river and sea dynamics coexist. Although considered a river beach, its proximity to the ocean and the influence of tides mean that its waters exhibit mixed characteristics. The more inner side, facing the course of the Mira, tends to be calmer, while the tip of the beach, more exposed, feels the influence of sea waves.
The beach's name is linked to the geological formations that can be observed at the base of the coastal cliff that borders it. These are natural cavities and small caves carved into the rock over time, known in the region as "furnas." These geological structures are more visible during low tide and add an interesting scenic element to the site.
With a considerable stretch of sand, Praia das Furnas offers space to be enjoyed in various ways. It is a good place for moments of relaxation, for walks along the water, or for those seeking more dynamic activities. The conditions of the estuary waters, particularly on the more sheltered side, are suitable for practicing some water sports, such as canoeing or windsurfing.
The uniqueness of Praia das Furnas, particularly for being a river beach of great beauty integrated into a coastal context, has been publicly recognized. In 2012, the beach was awarded the title of "Best River Beach" within the scope of the "7 Wonders Beaches of Portugal" competition, highlighting its natural and scenic value.
