Church of Our Lady of Grace

Category: Religious Architecture > Church

Location

Located in the heart of Vila Nova de Milfontes, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça stands in a central square, a landmark of the village's oldest area. Surrounded by a walled courtyard that once served as a cemetery, its main facade faces this space, inviting a peaceful pause and observation of the surrounding environment.

A History of Resilience

The church's history possibly dates back to the late 15th century, with indications of its earlier existence still visible today, such as the holy water font inside. However, it was in the early 16th century that its structure was rebuilt, belonging at that time to the Order of Santiago da Espada, whose cross is engraved on the main portal.

Over the centuries, the building faced significant challenges, from earthquake tremors, such as that of 1531, to devastation caused by Moorish pirates. Each event led to successive works of alteration and reconstruction. The bell tower, for instance, is a more recent addition, dating from the early 19th century. Despite the transformations, the main facade and the chancel arch preserve elements of their original essence, resisting the more modern interventions of the 20th century.

Architecture and Styles

The church presents a fusion of architectural styles, a result of the various renovation campaigns that extended from the medieval period. Its design combines the simplicity of popular architecture with the so-called "plain style" (estilo chão), characterized by sobriety and the absence of large decorative elements. However, it is possible to observe some traces of Rococo influence, particularly noticeable in the polylobed finial of the main facade's gable and in the bell tower itself.

This late presence of Rococo illustrates a certain particularity of the region, which maintained older models in detriment to new aesthetic currents. The structure, with a longitudinal plan, integrates the main nave, a chancel, a baptistery, and the bell tower.

Interior Highlights and Traditions

Upon entering the church, the holy water font immediately stands out, a notable piece in Gothic style stonework, adorned with acanthus leaves, which is considered one of the oldest parts of the primitive medieval construction.

The nave walls, partially covered with polychrome pattern tiles in shades of blue, yellow, and white, contribute to a serene atmosphere. Inside, the baptistery deserves attention, with its barrel vault and a baptismal font in stonework. The arch leading to the chancel, robust and made of stonework, with a prominent keystone, is another point of visual interest.

Beyond its architectural and historical importance, the church maintains a strong bond with the local community. It is from here that a river procession departs, held annually on a date close to August 15th, bearing witness to the village's connection to the river and the sea.
