The Hermitage of Saint Anthony is situated in a tranquil Alentejo setting, in the Estebainha urbanization, on the outskirts of Vila Nova da Baronia. Integrated into the vast Herdade de São Sebastião estate, its position stands out in a rural environment, on a vast plain, surrounded by extensive cultivated fields. The approach to the site is marked by the presence of an old stone cross, inviting discovery of this isolated monument.
This example of religious architecture is a notable testament to the Mannerist style in the Alentejo. The hermitage features a longitudinal plan, characterized by a succession of volumes that include a narthex, a main nave, and a chancel, to which a sacristy is attached. Although its exterior reveals remarkable sobriety, contrasting with the richness that once marked the interior, it is still possible to observe the careful structure and the projecting pilasters culminating in pyramidal pinnacles, giving it a distinct presence in the landscape.
The true charm of the Hermitage of Saint Anthony lies in the remnants of its rich interior decoration. Despite having suffered significant losses over time, such as most of its frescoes and original tilework, the chancel and its vault still preserve a set of 18th-century mural paintings. These works, by an unknown artist, depict scenes from the life of Saint Anthony and figures of musical angels, elements that are part of a valuable core of mural painting in the region and offer a glimpse into its former artistic opulence.
Built in the late 16th century, the hermitage underwent renovations in the 17th and 18th centuries, periods during which elements such as the narthex and mural paintings were added. However, the early 20th century marked its abandonment, leading to an advanced state of ruin. After decades of neglect, and with some of its original tiles transferred to the Mother Church of Vila Nova da Baronia for preservation, the Hermitage of Saint Anthony was subjected to archaeological work in 2000. Its historical and cultural value was officially recognized in 2013, when it was classified as a Monument of Public Interest, safeguarding its heritage for future generations.
