The Interpretive Center for Talha Wine is located in Vila de Frades, a tranquil village in the municipality of Vidigueira, in the heart of Alentejo. This space, specifically created for its function, is situated in the Bairro Doutor Alfredo Caetano da Silva. Its central location in the village provides a welcoming atmosphere, typical of Alentejo settlements, facilitating immersion in the region's culture and winemaking tradition.
Dedicated to one of the oldest and most unique wine production methods, the Interpretive Center for Talha Wine explores a tradition dating back to Roman times, with over two thousand years of history. This cultural space serves as a guardian and transmitter of the knowledge and experiences associated with talha wine, a product where grapes ferment in large clay amphorae. The center reveals how this practice has remained alive through countless generations, with Alentejo playing a fundamental role in its preservation to this day, highlighting its cultural and patrimonial value.
A visit to the Interpretive Center for Talha Wine offers a sensory immersion into the culture of this unique wine. Those who explore the space are invited to discover the characteristic smells and subtle aromas, to listen to the sounds of the vineyard, and to feel the presence of the landscapes that inspire this ancestral production. The exhibition route guides the visitor through the history of talha wine, from Roman Antiquity to the present, using augmented reality technology to enrich the narrative. Proverbs and Alentejo traditional singing (cante alentejano) are unveiled, elements that, together, shape the soul of this wine. The production cycle is detailed, starting with vineyard cultivation, passing through vinification in talhas inside wineries, and culminating in the recreation of a traditional tavern, where the social context of wine enjoyment is understood.
The center deepens the understanding of the "savoir-faire" of talha wine, revealing it as an intrinsic part of local identity and intangible heritage. The exhibition is organized into thematic areas that address the territory, its millennial history, vineyard culture, and the production process in the wineries. This space not only documents but also celebrates the persistence of a tradition that marks the landscape and the experiences of the community. Through the presented narrative, it is possible to understand how talha wine is a link between the past and the present, keeping alive an identity rooted in the Vidigueira region, connected to conviviality and the rich Alentejo culture.
