The Church of Saint James is located in the heart of Vale de Santiago, a peaceful community in the municipality of Odemira, in the Alentejo region. More specifically, it is situated in Bairro Novo dos Pinheiros, an area that is part of the village's urban fabric. Its presence marks the center of local life, offering an authentic perspective on Alentejo living.
The history of the Church of Saint James dates back to the 18th century, a period when it was built as part of a parish church renovation program, driven by the influential Order of Santiago. This religious heritage witnessed significant events, such as the devastating earthquake of 1755, which caused serious damage to the structure. However, its resilience is notable, having undergone significant reconstruction work in 1769, a date visible on the side portal, and, later, important internal and roof renovations in 1940, which adapted the space to the community's needs throughout the centuries.
The Church of Saint James is a notable example of 18th-century religious architecture, combining Baroque elements with the simplicity of the so-called plain style. On the exterior, its main façade, facing west, stands out with its polylobed gable and a straight lintel ashlar portal, above which a large window opens. To the left, the two-story bell tower, topped by a stepped dome and urns, displays a clock face. On the south side, a side portal reveals the date 1769 and the distinctive cross of the Order of Santiago, a testament to its historical connection.
Upon entering, visitors encounter a single nave, covered by an elegant barrel vault. Elements such as the pulpit with its stone basin and the side altars, richly decorated with gilded and polychrome carving, capture attention. The chancel, separated from the nave by a triumphal arch, boasts a main altarpiece that stands out for the same opulence of its carving, culminating in the representation of the cross of the Order of Santiago. In the sacristy, the old vestment chest and a stone lavabo complete the ensemble, revealing the functionality and beauty of the details.
Known both as the Church of Saint James and, at times, as the Church of Saint Catherine, this religious building transcends its spiritual function, serving as an important symbol of the identity and community life of Vale de Santiago. Its presence and the richness of its elements, from the cross of the Order of Santiago that adorns its facade and interior, to the robustness of its architecture, reflect the history and faith rooted in this Alentejo locality.
