Located in Herdade de Água de Peixes, about 6 km from the village of Alvito, in the municipality of Alvito, district of Beja.
The building is a National Monument since 2002.
The Água de Peixes region has a long history, with vestiges from Roman times, including iron mines and a rustic farmhouse. The manor house was built in the 12th century, but its current appearance dates back to the 16th century. It was owned by the House of Braganza and the Duke of Cadaval.
During the 16th and 17th centuries, the Água de Peixes estate was a leisure location for the nobility, especially for the Dukes of Cadaval. The family enjoyed a pleasant environment, with plenty of hunting and abundant water.
The palace has a simple square plan, spread over two floors. In the center, there is a landscaped courtyard with a tank that, in the past, was a swimming pool. The courtyard has a peaceful atmosphere and is surrounded by a building that still retains a cloister-like appearance.
The building has a chapel with a single nave, illuminated by small windows. Its simple and austere style gives it an atmosphere of recollection, with windows decorated in Manueline style.
The architecture of the palace mixes elements of medieval and Manueline style. The exterior facade is painted in the typical colors of Alentejo, white and blue. The building is considered an example of Mudéjar influence in the region's architecture.
The palace has a collection of 18th-century Portuguese tiles, which decorate its walls and add an artistic and cultural touch to the space.
