The Fallen Tower of the Castle is located in the town of Serpa, in the heart of the municipality of the same name, in the district of Beja. It is integrated into the old part of the village, next to the walls of the medieval castle that dominates the white houses of Serpa. Access is via a narrow, cobbled street, lined with whitewashed houses, typical of Alentejo architecture.

The setting is picturesque and somewhat unexpected: the tower, once an integral part of the fortification's defenses, now stands tilted and broken, creating a passage under what remains of its structure. The contrast between the ancient stone and the white of the neighboring walls gives it a scenic and unique character.

History and Origin

This tower was part of the defensive system of the Castle of Serpa, built during the Middle Ages to protect the town from incursions from the south. Over the centuries, it suffered significant damage, notably after explosions caused by artillery and the natural collapse of old structures. Hence the name by which it became known, “Fallen Tower” (Torre Caída).

Despite its ruined state, the tower remains standing, defying time. The way part of its structure balances over the arch that crosses the street is impressive for its combination of fragility and resilience, bearing witness to the solidity of ancient military construction techniques.

Character and Atmosphere

The Fallen Tower stands out for its dramatic appearance and the somewhat mysterious atmosphere that surrounds the place. Visitors are invited to walk under the arch formed by the suspended stone blocks, feeling the grandeur of the walls and the weight of the history that rests there. The golden light of sunset enhances the textures of the stone, creating a play of shadows that accentuates the visual effect of the ensemble.

It is a spot that invites contemplation and photography, due to the combination of medieval architecture and traditional urban environment. More than a ruin, the Fallen Tower of the Castle is a silent symbol of the passage of time and the living memory of Serpa.
