Situated in the small locality of São Miguel do Pinheiro, in the municipality of Mértola, the church stands out remarkably in the area of Eira dos Cebolares. Positioned on top of a hill, this church enjoys a rural and isolated setting, offering an unobstructed view of the surrounding Baixo Alentejo landscape. Its atrium, partially walled and with a stone cross, reinforces the sense of a space for contemplation and tradition.

A Building with History

The Church of São Miguel do Pinheiro is a testament to the architectural and artistic evolution of the region, with its construction spanning the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. This religious building incorporates an interesting fusion of styles, from Mannerism, evident in its classicizing and stylized language, to Baroque and Rococo, visible in its decorative elements. It is an example of parish architecture in Baixo Alentejo, remaining in religious use to this day.

Architectural and Artistic Details

The exterior of the church is distinguished by its main facade, topped by a triangular pediment with a stone cross, and by the main portal which displays the coat of arms of the Order of Santiago de Espada. The bell tower, a later addition, features Baroque elements that enrich the ensemble. Inside, the church reveals a three-nave layout, a characteristic of the local construction tradition, separated by perfect round arches resting on stone columns adorned with polychrome decorated capitals. The sloping roof and the gilded and polychromed carved altarpieces in the side altars and the main altar are elements of great artistic value. The sacristy of the main altar is particularly noteworthy for its mural paintings. A detail of interest is the holy water font, which curiously reuses a Roman capital, linking the church's present to a more distant and diverse past.
