The Parish Church of São Martinho das Amoreiras stands imposingly in the locality of São Martinho das Amoreiras, integrated into the municipality of Odemira. It is situated in a central point of the village, next to Largo Adelino Amaro da Costa, standing out in the urban landscape with its unique and isolated presence, surrounded by the village streets and a square that precedes it.
This religious temple was built in the second half of the 18th century under the auspices of the Military Order of Saint James of the Sword, an entity with strong influence in the region. Over time, the church experienced periods of degradation, having been in ruins in the late 19th century. However, it underwent several significant interventions and restoration works throughout the 20th century, particularly in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1980s, which contributed to its conservation and the recovery of its original beauty.
The Church of São Martinho, as it is also known, is a large building that reflects a fascinating mix of architectural influences. Its general design adheres to local constructive tradition but also incorporates elements considered innovative for the period, inspired by trends that emerged during the reign of D. Maria I. Thus, it is possible to observe in this church a fusion of Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical styles.
On the exterior, its monumental facade, facing east, stands out, elevated from street level, accessed by a wide staircase. The tripartite composition of the front, with prominent pilasters, and the two lateral bell towers, crowned by spires with bulbous domes and urns, confer a remarkable grandeur upon it.
Upon entering, one discovers a single, large nave, with a peculiar concrete ceiling divided into three planes. Immediately after the main entrance, flanked by holy water fonts in stonework, there is a space beneath the high choir, giving access to the nave. The church houses two side chapels adorned with rich gilded and polychrome carving, which demonstrate the mastery of the artisans of the time.
In the chancel, covered by a barrel vault, the main altarpiece stands out, also worked with exuberant gilded and polychrome carving, which includes a throne and a camarim. In the center, a significant oil painting illustrates the Miracle of Saint Martin, patron saint of the church. The sacristy also holds a notable carved chest, a stonework lavabo, and a painting alluding to the Calvary, revealing the artistic richness and preserved heritage within its interior.
