Pego das Pias is located in the municipality of Odemira, near the town of São Luís. It is situated in a naturally isolated area, marked by the presence of the Ribeira do Torgal, a watercourse that flows into the Mira River. This setting gives the place a tranquil environment and a strong connection to nature.
The peculiar name "Pego das Pias" derives from the unique rock formations found on site. Over vast periods, the force of the water from the Ribeira do Torgal, through eddies and erosion, sculpted circular cavities in the rock, resembling sinks or basins. These geological formations tell the story of the river's dynamics and have shaped the landscape in a singular way.
At this point, the Ribeira do Torgal widens and the water is retained, forming a natural water mirror. This freshwater body, cool and inviting, creates an area of tranquility amidst the rocky surroundings. One of the distinctive visual elements is a large rock that rises from the water's surface, appearing to float and adding a focal point to the aquatic landscape.
Pego das Pias is also known for the legends that surround it and give it an aura of mystery. One popular story tells that a farmer's daughter, after a miraculous cure, became enchanted in this place due to her father's disobedience. Another ancient legend states that the Moors, during the Reconquista, hid a great treasure in the deep waters of the "pego" (pool), guarded by an enchanted Moorish maiden. Popular tradition suggests that these magical elements, and even the waters with alleged healing properties, could manifest themselves on special nights such as St. John's.
