Fonte das Figueiras (Fig Tree Fountain) is located in the heart of Santo Aleixo da Restauração, in the municipality of Moura, next to a rural road connecting to the village. Enclosed by whitewashed walls and rustic elements, it stands out in a tranquil corner, where the scent of dry herbs and warm earth permeates the air.
In the immediate vicinity, olive and fig trees grow, offering shade and creating a typical Alentejo atmosphere, where the silence is only broken by the singing of birds.
Erected in the mid-1960s by the Parish Council (year visible in the inscription “J.F. 1966”), Fonte das Figueiras was built to supply water to the village residents and agricultural workers. It stands as a testament to community organization during a time of water scarcity.
While similar landmarks have disappeared, this fountain has remained in good condition, preserving the memory of a way of life based on sharing and collective effort.
The small building is covered by a gabled roof of ceramic tiles, supported by whitewashed walls with irregular stone terracing. On the main facade, four metal spouts pour water into a granite-carved tank.
Around the structure, a paved floor and a rustic bench invite a brief pause, allowing observation of the harmony between the structure (the fountain) and the vast rural horizon.
With simple lines and soft colors, Fonte das Figueiras proves to be an interesting photographic subject: the contrast between the white of the walls and the red of the tiles stands out against the green of the olive trees.
Upon approaching, it is worth noting the wear on the spouts and the texture of the stone, elements that lend authenticity to the site and transport visitors to a timeless Alentejo landscape.
