The Chapel of Santo António is located in the village of Safara, in the municipality of Moura, district of Beja, more precisely in Vale do Malhão. Its integration into the village's urban fabric is noteworthy, being flanked by residential buildings and preceded by a cobbled square that invites observation of the site. Its inclusion in a Special Protection Area (SPA Mourão/Moura/Barrancos), an integral part of the Natura 2000 Network, highlights its presence within a protected natural landscape, so characteristic of this area of Alentejo.
The Chapel of Santo António has a history that most likely began in the 17th century, marking a centuries-old presence in the village of Safara. Over the centuries, the building has been the subject of attention and conservation. A significant intervention in 1849 stands out, which included not only the restoration of the structure but also the remarkable decoration of the interior dome, elements that endure and enrich the visitor's experience to this day.
The Chapel of Santo António displays the distinctive features of the popular and vernacular architecture that so well characterises the Alentejo region. Its floor plan reveals a single-nave structure, culminating in a square-shaped chancel. Inside, one of the most notable elements is the dome ceiling, skilfully supported by pendentives, a construction solution that reflects regional tradition and ingenuity.
From the outside, the chapel presents a remarkable austerity and simplicity, reflecting its popular essence. An easily identifiable element that rises above the structure is its belfry. Inside, the space reveals a sobriety that is broken by the attention given to the dome. This becomes the focal point of interior observation, being richly decorated with relief plasterwork that invites a more detailed appreciation.
The space in front of the Chapel of Santo António is a cobbled square, which integrates harmoniously into the urban landscape of Safara. This place, designed to be welcoming, has been subject to improvements, now featuring landscaped areas and seating elements. Such improvements have transformed its exterior into an inviting environment, ideal for a quiet break and for the contemplation of the monument and its setting.
