This site is located within the historic complex of the Convento de São Francisco (Convent of Saint Francis), in the heart of the city of Beja. Situated in the parish of Salvador e Santa Maria da Feira, the Capela dos Freires (Friars' Chapel) is positioned in an environment that reflects the long monastic presence in the region, revealing an integral part of Alentejo's built heritage.
Also known as the Capela dos Freires (Friars' Chapel), this room played a central role in the life of the Convento de São Francisco, functioning as the final resting place for many of the friars who dedicated their lives to the Franciscan order and to religious service in Beja. Its existence underscores the importance of memory and veneration of its members, reflecting monastic funerary practices and spirituality throughout the centuries. This space is, therefore, a testament to the life and legacy of the community that inhabited the convent.
Upon entering the Sala dos Túmulos (Tomb Room), visitors encounter an environment of profound serenity and contemplation. The architectural features, which are consistent with the convent's genesis, reveal characteristics of a monastic funerary space. It is expected to find sarcophagi or grave slabs, some with inscriptions or representations identifying the friars buried there, or the families who contributed to its construction or maintenance. The cold stone and the often dim lighting contribute to the solemn atmosphere of the place, inviting contemplation and reflection on the ephemeral nature of human life and the permanence of faith.
