Praia Fluvial da Tapada Grande is located in Mina de São Domingos, in the municipality of Mértola, right in the heart of the Alentejo. It lies on the banks of the reservoir formed by the old mining dam, in a rural setting characterized by gentle hills and eucalyptus groves.
Access is via secondary roads, surrounded by cork and holm oaks, offering a preview of the tranquility of this freshwater haven from the moment of arrival.
The reservoir resulted from the construction of the Tapada Grande dam, initiated in 1872 to supply the São Domingos mining operations and completed in 1882. Its waters, originally intended for industry, were later integrated into the life of the local community.
In 2001, the riverbank was transformed into a bathing area, preserving part of the original structures of the old mine and recalling the memory of the metallurgical activity that shaped the surrounding landscape.
The fine sandy beach extends alongside calm, slightly warm waters, inviting a dip or long moments of contemplation. The water's edge is dotted with small fish swimming near the surface, creating a lively and surprising environment.
The surroundings are dominated by a green carpet of Mediterranean vegetation, where the contrasts between the blue of the lake and the ochre of the banks offer a permanent reason to capture memorable photographs.
