Praia dos Carriços is located in the Longueira/Almograve area, within the municipality of Odemira, on the southwest coast of Portugal. This area is part of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, benefiting from a protected natural environment and characteristic views of the Alentejo coast.
The beach is specifically located within a small cove, an indentation of the coast that gives it a unique character. The surroundings are marked by cliffs that flank access to the sea.
In contrast to beaches with extensive sand, Praia dos Carriços has a predominantly rocky base. The beach floor is covered by an accumulation of pebbles and rounded stones, smoothed by the constant action of waves and tides.
This type of ground gives the beach a wilder appearance and is less inviting for the traditional "spreading of a towel", standing out for its unique geology and texture.
The sea level significantly influences the landscape and accessibility of Praia dos Carriços throughout the day. During low tide, a vast expanse of rocks that are usually submerged becomes exposed.
This phenomenon transforms the cove, revealing the underlying rocky structure and creating small natural pools that can be explored, changing the beach's dynamics with each tidal cycle.
The natural setting of Praia dos Carriços is dominated by the cliffs that delimit it. At the top of these rocky formations are coastal dunes, important elements for landscape stabilization and local biodiversity.
This scenery combines the robustness of the rock with the fragility of the dunes, creating a typical coastal landscape of this part of Alentejo, where the force of the Atlantic constantly shapes the coastline.
Given its characteristics, with a pebble floor and the notable presence of rocks, Praia dos Carriços is not ideal for sea bathing in the traditional sense. Its value lies in other aspects of the coastal experience.
The beach is known and frequented by local line fishermen, who find suitable conditions for their activity in the rocky configuration and associated marine life. For visitors, it offers a quieter environment focused on observing nature, geology, and local fishing life.
