Foz dos Ouriços Beach is situated in the area of Bairro Adelina Feliciana Alecrim, in the locality of Almograve, municipality of Odemira, on the Alentejo coast. It is integrated into the vast area of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.
Located slightly north of Almograve Beach, its position on the Atlantic coast, at the mouth of a small valley, gives it a unique natural setting, flanked by cliffs that rise above the sandy beach.
The sandy area of this beach presents a configuration that gently widens towards the sea, forming a kind of natural funnel. It is here that the small Foz dos Ouriços Stream meets the Atlantic Ocean, an element that gave the place its name and shapes part of the beach's landscape.
The cliffs that delimit the beach are topped by dune systems, adding another layer of diversity to the coastal environment, with typical sand-binding vegetation.
Foz dos Ouriços Beach is renowned for its calm and peaceful environment. Frequently described as a place of refuge, its tranquil atmosphere invites moments of serenity by the coastline, away from disturbances.
The tranquility found here is one of its most valued characteristics by those seeking the quietness of the Alentejo coast.
The cliffs surrounding the beach serve as an open book of the region's geological history. In these outcrops, it is possible to observe rocks such as shales and greywackes that formed millions of years ago, during the Carboniferous period.
These rocks show impressive folds and deformations, visible testimonies of the tectonic forces that acted in this area over time, revealing the complexity of this coast's formation.
In the vicinity of Foz dos Ouriços Beach, an archaeological site of great relevance has been identified. This site reveals traces of human occupation dating back to the Mesolithic period, associated with the Mirense culture.
Various artifacts were found, such as stone tools, evidence of hearths, and shell midden remains, suggesting that this site was a stopping point for ancient human groups who used privileged access to the ocean for activities such as fishing.
