Azenha do Mar Beach is located in the coastal village of the same name, within the civil parish of São Teotónio, in the municipality of Odemira. This location is situated on the Alentejo Coast and is part of the area classified as the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. The beach develops within a natural cove, protected by the high cliffs that flank it.
The beach's composition is characterized by the presence of rolled pebbles and shingle, distinguishing it from the fine sand found on other beaches in the region. An interesting natural element is a small waterfall that can be observed on site. To the north, a constructed jetty complements the natural protection offered by large rocks, forming the bar of the fishing harbor. The cliff point defines the southern limit of this cove.
The community of Azenha do Mar, where the beach is located, has a relatively recent formation, dating back to the 1960s. Its initial development was linked to seaweed harvesting, which emerged as a subsistence alternative for local inhabitants. The very configuration of the place, with a sheltered cove, a freshwater spring, and a small stream, made it appealing for the gradual settlement of families. The name "Azenha" (meaning "watermill") derives from the past existence of a watermill that operated in the area, using the stream's water power to grind cereals.
Azenha do Mar's small port remains active, supporting the practice of artisanal fishing. This traditional activity is carried out in small boats and contributes to the identity and livelihood of the local community. Seaweed harvesting continues to be a practice that, although seasonal, is associated with the daily lives of those who live and work along this stretch of coast.
