The Church of São Miguel is located in the heart of Póvoa de São Miguel, a small locality in the municipality of Moura. Its imposing presence naturally integrates into the urban fabric of the village, marking its position as a point of reference and a central element in the town's landscape. It is situated in an area that invites a peaceful observation of the traditional houses and local life.
The construction of the Church of São Miguel began between the late 15th century and the first quarter of the 16th century, establishing itself as a religious landmark in Póvoa de São Miguel. This temple was under the purview of the Order of São Bento de Avis, an influential institution of the time. Although its foundations date back to the 16th century, its current form is believed to have been more fully consolidated during the 18th century. The building's history is also marked by the effects of the 1755 earthquake, which inflicted considerable damage upon it.
The Church of São Miguel exhibits characteristics of the Baroque style, visible in both its features and its volume. The main facade, particularly in the chancel area, is topped with battlements, a detail that gives it a distinctive appearance and aligns it with other religious constructions in the region. The building consists of a nave, a bell tower, and the chancel, each with its own roof, creating a distinct exterior silhouette with varying heights.
Upon entering the Church of São Miguel, one of the most prominent elements is the nave's vault, distinguished by its elaborate mural paintings. In these artistic representations, figures of angels and the four evangelists can be observed, enriching the space with a symbolic and visual dimension. The interior of the temple also houses three main altars: one dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Rosário (Our Lady of the Rosary), another to Senhor Jesus (Lord Jesus), and, in the center, the main altar, consecrated to São Miguel (Saint Michael), the patron saint.
