The bridge over the Enxoé stream stands in the tranquility of the Alentejo countryside, at the union of the parishes of Salvador and Santa Maria, within the municipality of Serpa. It is located about eight kilometers from the municipal seat, isolated over the stream itself. Its presence complements the surrounding rural landscape, offering a glimpse of the calm and vast nature of the region, accessible from National Road 256, which connects Serpa to Moura.
This remarkable example of road architecture has its deep origins in local history. Although its current configuration dates back to the Modern Age, the bridge rests on a foundation that, it is believed, may have had a medieval, or even earlier, origin. Its existence is confirmed by historical records as early as 1758, in the Parochial Memories of Serpa, which underscores its lasting role in connecting routes of the region throughout the centuries.
The bridge is characterized by its slightly curved, humpback deck, known as 'cavalete', which extends for approximately sixty meters. It is supported by six arches, whose archivolts are detailed in brick, the only contrasting feature in its plastered masonry. The pillars, designed to withstand the stream's current, are reinforced by triangular cutwaters, structures that break the force of the water. The path over the bridge is paved with stone slabs, flanked by solid masonry parapets.
The bridge over the Enxoé stream is a significant testament to built heritage, classified as a Monument of Public Interest. Today, it transcends its original function as a passage, asserting itself as a cultural and historical element of the Serpa region. It represents a point of interest for those who value traditional architecture and the history of ancient communication routes in the Alentejo interior, inviting observation and reflection on the past.
