The Mértola Bridge, also known as Torre do Rio, is located on the right bank of the Guadiana River, in Mértola, in the district of Beja, Alentejo. It is near the Porta da Ribeira, in the ancient walls of the town.
Today, the bridge is in ruins, but it is still possible to observe traces of its structures, including six piers, which are pillars believed to have been part of its construction.
It is believed that the bridge had a defensive function, although, over time, it has been mistaken for a simple bridge. Its importance is mentioned in the charter of Mértola, from 1254, and also in a drawing by Duarte de Armas, from the 16th century.
The Mértola Bridge was classified as a National Monument in 1932, which guarantees its preservation. It is located within the Vale do Guadiana Natural Park and the Guadiana Site of Community Importance, part of the Natura 2000 Network.
The area around the bridge is part of a natural environment, ideal for those who enjoy outdoor walks, with the Guadiana River and the typical landscapes of Alentejo as a backdrop. Visiting the bridge is an opportunity to explore the history of the region and appreciate the peaceful views.
