The Cabeça Gorda Biological Park is integrated into an extensive forest area, the Cabeça Gorda and Salvada Forest Perimeter, covering approximately 325 hectares. Located in the surroundings of the village of Cabeça Gorda, in the municipality of Beja, this green area constitutes a landmark in the typically rural landscape of Alentejo.
Historically, the lands that today comprise the Biological Park were used for cereal crops and intensive grazing. This practice led to a gradual impoverishment of the soils in the region. In response, in 1958, an afforestation project was implemented with the aim of reversing this situation and enhancing the area.
The success of this project transformed the area into a consolidated forest perimeter, dominated by species such as cork oak and eucalyptus, demonstrating significant environmental recovery and creating a new type of landscape in Lower Alentejo.
The landscape of the Biological Park is marked by an established forest, resulting from the afforestation project. Predominant tree species include cork oak and eucalyptus, complemented by others such as stone pine. Among the shrub vegetation, cistus stands out, covering vast areas.
This forest environment serves as a habitat for a diversity of wild life, including deer, wild boars, partridges, and hares. For those who enjoy observing fauna, dawn and dusk are the most opportune times. The park is also known for the occurrence of "silarca," a highly prized mushroom species in the region, which typically appears around March, and whose local importance is recognized.
In addition to its environmental value, the Biological Park was designed as an open space for the community and visitors, with the aim of promoting natural and rural heritage. It is a place that invites the practice of various outdoor activities.
The existing trails and paths make it ideal for hiking, mountain biking (MTB), or running. It is also a pleasant setting for family outings, offering the opportunity for direct contact with nature and the serene environment of the forest perimeter.
