It stands on Rua do Esquível, in the heart of Beja's Historic Centre, nestled between neighboring buildings. The main façade, facing south-east, receives abundant light throughout the day, highlighting the contrast between the whitewash and the grey stonework.
At the rear, a walled courtyard preserves a peaceful corner, with a few trees that create a discreet shade and invite a pause in an essentially urban environment.
Dating back to the mid-16th century, the palace was likely built by the Furtado Mendonça family, whose coat of arms still stands out on the main doorway's frame. Later, it passed to the Maldonado lineage, from which it inherited the designation it has maintained throughout the centuries.
Throughout its existence, it has housed various uses: a noble house, a secondary school in the 19th century, and currently serves as a student residence, reflecting Beja's social and cultural transformations.
The central façade is divided into three sections by stone pilasters; on the ground floor, frames with gentle curves precede the Baroque portal with a curved pediment. On the noble floor, French windows feature straight entablatures and cast-iron balconies, lending rhythm and elegance to the ensemble.
Interior access is via a double arcade leading to a U-shaped staircase, with steps and railings made of Trigaches marble. In the main halls, painted wooden ceilings display panels with historical scenes, such as the Battle of Ourique, and allegorical motifs related to the nation's foundation.
The interplay between natural light and light surfaces creates a tranquil atmosphere, despite the proximity of city movement. The sculptural and pictorial details offer an invitation to careful observation.
The interior courtyard, delimited by arcades and balustrades, offers a serene contrast to the urban surroundings, making the palace a space of balance between architectural grandeur and aesthetic sensibility.
