The Monte da Rocha Dam is located in the municipality of Ourique, in the heart of Baixo Alentejo. You will find it in a vast rural landscape, punctuated by the typical serenity of this region, in the vicinity of the village of Panóias. Its imposing structure rises over the bed of the Sado River, forming an extensive reservoir that naturally integrates into the Alentejo surroundings, offering unobstructed views over the countryside.
This dam is a landmark of civil engineering in Alentejo, with its construction taking place in the 1960s and 1970s. It became operational in 1972, becoming a fundamental element of the region ever since. Its strategic importance was highlighted by events such as the visit to the construction site in March 1969, by the then President of the Council, Marcello Caetano, underlining the recognition this infrastructure held for local development.
The Monte da Rocha Dam, an embankment structure, creates a vast expanse of water that punctuates the Alentejo landscape. This reservoir is a vital resource for the region, contributing to water supply and agricultural activity. The expanse of the water, in contrast with the sobriety of the surrounding fields, offers an environment of tranquility and vastness, inviting contemplation and enjoyment of the characteristic calm of Alentejo.
